Line 3 - Forestal Ecology

This line emerges from the two previous ones and it is aimed at applying them to the specific case of forest ecosystems. The combination of ecophysiology with demography and reproductive biology, among other aspects, is facilitated by the thematic network GLOBIMED. Main current topics of interest are:

Available radiation in the understory of a Holm oak (Quercus ilex) forest mixed with rockrose (Cistus ladanifer) in El Pardo (Madrid). Mean radiation in the understory was 50% of that in the open, but the remarkable spatial heterogeneity led to zones receiving more than 80% and other less than 20% within a few meters apart from each other. The map is 1 hectare an was made interpolating from more than 900 hemispherical photographs taken in a regular messh of 1 m2.

Light as an ecological factor. Effect of irradiance on forest flora and fauna.

Characteristics of light in Iberian forest understories.

The ecological role of environmental heterogeneity. Implications for species coexistence.

Influence of forest management on environmental heterogeneity, particularly in traditionally managed systems such as oak forests and woodlands.

Rasgos funcionales de especies y poblaciones invasoras.

Influencia de la gestión del bosque, especialmente del abandono de formaciones muy intervenidas (alcornocales, encinares), en la heterogeneidad ambiental.

Effects of the interactions between factors on understory communities with emphasis on drought and shade.
