Line 4 - Ecology Restauration

This line is aimed at contributing from the science of ecology to the development of protocols and practices to restore degraded ecosystems such as those generated during the construction of large infrastructures (motorways, railways), or those affected by fires or deforestation. This line is carried out in collaboration with a number of enterprises and organizations that carry out activities spanning from construction to reforestation (FERROVIAL-AGROMAN, TRAGSA among others). Main current topics of interest are:

Hydroseeding controlled experiments during the restoration of the slopes of the Costa del Sol (Málaga) motorway. The addition of organic soil with the natural seed bank had significant and positive effects on plant cover, diversity and productivity of the herbaceous communities.

Facilitation and competition between species in degraded or extreme ecosystems.

Colonization and succession in degraded ecosystems.

Functional implications of biodiversity.

Influence of previous phenotype on the success of the transplant in reforestation projects with nursery grown plants.

Protocols to enhance plant quality (in nurseries).

Protocols to enhance the restoration of motorway slopes (alternatives to hydroseeding, previous treatment of the substratum).
